You read that correctly. Support for the cloud/Desktop based storage run by Google will be cut off on December 11th and the app will shut down completely on March 12th, 2018. Although from a business and consumer standpoint Drive seems to be a go to productivity tool; the company is deciding to end its life in place for a new ‘Backup and Sync’ app. The new Backup and Sync app expands Google’s approach to file storage spanning your PC and phone.
This new approach to online/offline storage lets Google’s software synchronize files you’ve stored on your desktop or your documents folders and make all your photos part of Google Photos, too. On the Enterprise side, Google has added a Drive File Streamer, which saves space on your local drive while providing access to “all of your Google Drive files on demand, directly from your computer.” With the importance of cloud based services growing this seems to be a smart and efficient move though it will undoubtedly put many at an inconvenience more than anything.
