Flick Picks April 21st

1) A lot of new TV shows are airing this week. Season three of Into the Badlands and season 2 of Westworld start on the 22nd. The 100 season 5 is on the 25th and the one I’m most excited about, season 2 of The Handmaid’s Tale also on the 25th.

2) The Russo Brothers have been developing a TV version of Rick Remender and Wes Craig’s graphic novel, Deadly Class, since 2016. But now the Syfy channel has purchased the project and given it a series order. The comic follows a group of teenagers through the 1980s San Francisco punk scene and they attend a high school for assassins. The cast list includes Benedict Wong as Master Lin, the headmaster of the School for the Deadly Arts, Benjamin Wadsworth as Marcus, Lana Condor as Sanya and Maria Gabriela de Faria as Maria.

3) Outcast season 2 finally has a US release date. It aired in the UK from April to June 2017 on Fox, but it will finally be arriving to Cinemax in the US on July 20th. The show is based on the comic book series by Robert Kirkman and stars Patrick Fugit.

4) Margot Robbie is confirmed for a Birds of Prey spinoff directed by Cathy Yan. The script is by Christina Hodson, who was recently hired to write the Batgirl movie. Filming is supposed to start by the end of the year.

5) Steven Spielberg will be taking on the DC universe. He’s going to produce and hopefully direct a movie based on Blackhawk, a comic about a team of WWII-era fighter pilots. His company, Amblin Entertainment, will be working along with Warner Brothers Pictures, who produced Ready Player One. David Koepp, who has worked with Spielberg several times in the past, will be writing the script.

6) Casting for the Girl in the Spider’s Web has been released. This is the sequel to the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, which came out in 2011. Claire Foy, from the Crown, will replace Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander. The movie is scheduled to be released on November 9th.

7) Disney’s live-action Mulan finally has the rest of its lead characters. Jet Li will be playing the emperor of China. Gong Li is now confirmed as the villain, a powerful witch, which is a new character for the live-action version and Xana Tang will play Mulan’s sister, another new character for the film.

8) Some more news on the Aquaman standalone film. Randall Park, best known for Fresh Off the Boat, has been added to the cast during reshoots as Dr. Stephen Shin. The plot appears to be changing a bit with these reshoots. Aquaman is scheduled to hit theatres in the US on December 21st, but the UK release date has been moved up to the 14th, so there’s a chance the US date will also change.

9) And of course, Avengers: Infinity War hits theatres on the 27th.
