Flick Picks 5/5/18

Quite a few TV renewals were announced last week.

1) Season two of Westworld just started and HBO has announced that the show will be back for season 3 but there’s no news on the release date.

2) The Handmaid’s Tale has also been renewed for a season 3.

3) Sean Bean’s crime series, Oath, airing on Crackle, will be coming back for a second season. The show is the most-watched new original series on Crackle.

4) We know that Peaky Blinders will be back for season 5 sometime in 2019, but creator Steven Knight has hinted that season 5 might not be the final season, and deals are in the works for seasons 6 and 7 as well as a ballet spinoff.

5) American Gods has been renewed for season 2 and has begun production. This is great news, since season 1 didn’t even make it halfway through the book. We’ll be seeing the show sometime in 2019. We do know that Gillian Anderson won’t be returning and Kristen Chenoweth is also considering not returning. Showrunners Fuller and Green also won’t be back. Jesse Alexander will be sharing the duties with creator Neil Gaiman.

6) Syfy has announced that horror series Channel Zero season four will be called The Dream Door. They also revealed the main cast will include Brandon Scott as Tom Hodgson and Maria Sten as his wife Jillian Hope Hodgson. Supporting cast includes Steven Robertson and Steven Weber. The show is expected to premiere in 2019.

7) Another show has been announced for the DC Universe streaming service being launched by Warner Brothers later this year. James Wan will be the executive producer of a Swamp Thing tv series arriving in 2019. Mark Verheiden and Gary Dauberman will be writing and co-producing the show. So, could we possibly get a Matt Ryan cameo as Constantine since he first appeared in a Swamp Thing comic? Other shows planned for the new DC streaming service include Titans, Young Justice: Outsiders, Metropolis and a Harley Quinn animated series.

8) A TV version of the comedy vampire series What We Do in the Shadows is coming to FX. It will be a 10 episode 30 minute comedy series based on the New Zealand film and is scheduled to air in spring 2019.

9) We finally have more details about Stephen King’s Castle Rock TV show being produced by Bad Robot and Warner Brothers for Hulu. Sam Shaw and Dusty Thomason are writing the series. Castle Rock will be premiering on July 25th. The cast will include Terry O’Quinn, known for his work on Lost, Scott Glenn, Andre Holland, Bill Skarsgard, Melanie Lynskey, Jane Levy and also Sissy Spacek.

10) John Cena will be starring in the film adaptation of The Janson Directive, written by Robert Ludlum and being produced by Dwayne Johnson. The story is about a consular ops agent turned private security consultant.

11) It doesn’t come as much of a surprise, but there will be a Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3 currently slated for 2020. Filming will begin sometime in 2019. All we know is that Vol. 3 will take place after the events of Infinity War.

12) Avengers: Infinity War has become the fastest release to reach $1 billion at the box office worldwide. It did it in 11 days and the film still hasn’t opened in China. It has already made more money than the entire box office runs of Captain America: Civil War, Transformers Dark of the Moon, Lord of the Rings Return of the King and Skyfall. The only other superhero movies ahead of it are the two other Avenger movies and Black Panther. It seems quite possible Infinity War will surpass those.
