Flick Picks July 16th

1) We’ve got a couple shows premiering over the next two weeks. Wynonna Earp season three on the 20th, Outcast season 2 also on the 20th and Castle Rock on the 25th. The next big movie to look forward to is Mission Impossible: Fallout on the 27th.

2) Black Panther and Walking Dead actress Danai Gurira is in talks to potentially join two big franchises. She is in early talks for Godzilla vs. Kong and also apparently being scouted for Star Trek 4.

3) Showtime has officially ordered a a Halo tv series for 2019. Kyle Killen, from Awake, will be serving as executive producer, writer and showrunner. Rupert Wyatt, known for Rise of the Planet of the Apes will be directing several episodes and also be an executive producer. Looks like they’re trying to find their equivalent Game of Thrones or Lord of the Rings universe.

4) A live-action Gundam movie is officially in the works. Legendary Pictures has obtained the rights and will be teaming up with Sunrise Inc.. Legendary Pictures has strong ties with Universal and Warner Brothers.

5) It looks like Gillian Anderson is seeking out the truth again in the upcoming movie UFO. The movie centers on two college students who become ensnared in the mystery of some UFO sightings. Anderson plays professor Dr. Hendricks, who is skeptical about their UFO findings. The movie is written and directed by Ryan Eslinger.

6) Marvel has just hired Australian Cate Shortland to direct the Black Widow movie. She previously directed 2004’s Somersault and 2012’s Lore. The studio also picked up Jac Schaeffer to write the screenplay. He previously wrote TiMER and The Hustle.

7) The DCEU Shazam movie has wrapped shooting and finally has a release date. April 5th, 2019 starring Zachary Levi as the adult Billy Batson. Even though filming has wrapped, we have now learned that Djmon Hounsou has joined the cast to play the wizard who bestows superhero powers to Billy Batson.

8) It’s official, Jeremy Renner will be starring in Todd McFarlane’s Spawn reboot as Detective ‘Twitch’ Williams. Williams of course is pretty much the only human friend of Spawn, played by Jamie Foxx.

9) The Fast and the Furious spinoff Hobbs and Shaw has cast Idris Elba as the villain. The trifecta of Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham and Idris Elba is going to be epic.

10) The new Robocop sequel is starting to move forward as Neill Blomkamp has just signed on to direct. He previously worked on District 9 and Elysium. The writers of the original film, Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner will be serving as producer and executive producer. Justin Rhodes will be re-writing a script they worked on several years ago. Rhodes wrote the upcoming Terminator movie. There’s no cast or production start date yet.

11) It’s official. Zombieland 2 is expected to start production in January 2019 with all the original cast. It’s looking at an October release date to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the original film.

12) A contingency of Fox shareholders have filed a lawsuit in Delaware federal court to block Disney’s purchase of the company. This is happening after Disney beat out Comcast with a bid of $71.3 billion. We’ll just have to wait and see how the lawsuit could impact the merger.
